NSIH-CDIF - Healthcare Associated Infections: Clostridioides Difficile

Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) are a leading cause of diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis in acute and chronic care settings. Due to the growing incidence and advancing hypervirulent strains of Clostridioides difficile infections (CDIs), the Belgian Infection Control Society (BICS), in collaboration with Sciensano, is organizing a national surveillance in hospitals to determine the incidence of CDIs in our country. Registration began on July 1, 2006.

Population Coverage
The population of NSIH_CDIF comprises all acute hospitals in Belgium (eligible through the Royal Decree). Hospitals are not obliged to participate completely to this surveillance.
Purposes
  • Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) are a major cause of severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon (colitis) in healthcare institutions. They are considered as ’healthcare associated infections’ (HAI) as they usually occur after treatment with antibiotics. The objective of this project is to monitor the occurrence and severity of CDI cases in Belgian hospitals, in order to draw appropriate infection prevention and control measures.

Provenance
  • Participation in the surveillance is voluntary and requires the registration of all cases identified in the hospital during at least one semester per year and the shipment of 5 consecutive strains to the NRC for typing.
