Surveillance of Infectious Diseases by National Reference Centres for humane microbiology for Salmonella spp. (be.Prepared)
Since 2011, the Service Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases of Sciensano, which is responsible for the surveillance of infectious diseases, has been coordinating a network of reference laboratories for human microbiology called National Reference Centres (NRC). Each NRC consists of one or more laboratories and is designated as such for a pathogen or a group of pathogens according to clearly defined criteria in a procedure that is repeated at most every 5 years. The Royal Decree of 09/02/2011 defines the legal and financial framework in which the NRCs operate and the tasks they must perform. The activities of the NRCs cover individual pathogens or groups of pathogens that are considered priorities in terms of diagnosis, quality of care and public health needs. To strengthen preparedness for possible future pandemics, an interoperable infrastructure has been developed to improve infectious disease surveillance. The overarching architecture called be.Prepared facilitates the secure central collection, processing and linkage of laboratory, clinical and epidemiological data with microbial genomic indicator data derived from whole genome sequencing (WGS) analyses. By integrating NRC data into be.Prepared, surveillance efforts will be strengthened, enabling better detection of outbreaks, tracking of antimicrobial resistance and overall public health response. In addition to their surveillance role, NRCs support laboratories in technical aspects of diagnostics and assist the government in managing health threats.
