Belgian Index of Multiple Deprivation 2011 by statistical sector
This dataset contains data from 2011 with estimates of the Belgian Index of multiple deprivation (BIMD) by statistical sector. The BIMD provides a multidimensional view on social deprivation in Belgium, integrating 6 domains - education, employment, income, housing, crime, and health. It provides a robust basis for assessing social inequalities in health and other outcomes. The BIMD is a relative measure of deprivation, and is computed at the level of the statistical sector, the smallest administrative level in Belgium. Based on the BIMD score, each statistical sector is ranked from the most to the least deprived. For a more sparse view, the ranks are furthermore grouped into deciles, with the first decile comprising the 10% most deprived statistical sectors. The index follows a well-established methodological framework, and is based on a weighted combination of the 6 key domains of social deprivation - education, employment, income, housing, crime, and health. The indicators underlying these domains are derived from population-wide data sources, such as the Belgian census. Their selection is based on the premises that deprivation refers to unmet needs, which are caused by a lack of access to resources, not only the material ones (housing, employment, etc.) but also the social (rights associated with employment, personal safety, or healthcare). The BIMD 2001 and 2011 were created by Martina Otavova (UCLouvain & UHasselt). Her PhD project was a part of the ELLIS project (https://www.brain-ellis.be/) and was funded by the Belgian Federal Science Policy (BELSPO) through the BRAIN-be 2.0 programme.

Data on factors impacting on health, including socio-economic, environmental and behavioural determinants of health Population-based health data registries (public health registries)
- Population Coverage
- The BIMD covers the whole of Belgium. The underlying indicators represent all persons officially residing in Belgium at the reference period when computed over multiple years or at the time of the census. Thus, individuals who lived in Belgium and were not officially registered were not included in the underlying indicators.
- Purposes
-
-
The BIMD can be used to investigate geographical inequalities in relative deprivation in one composite indicator or in six domains (education, income, employment, housing, crime and health) in Belgium.

- The data for the BIMD is sourced from several existing databases. The income, employment, education, and housing domains build on the demographic database produced by Statbel. This data sources includes pseudonymized information from the 2001 and 2011 Belgian population censuses, data from the National Register on all-cause mortality and population structure, and data on cause-specific mortality from death certificates. The database covers all persons officially residing in Belgium at the reference period when computed over multiple years or at the time of the census. Thus, individuals who lived in Belgium and were not officially registered were not included in our datasets. In addition, aggregated data on the proportion of households below the minimum living wage at the statistical level, included in the income domains for 2001 and 2011, were obtained from Statbel. The employment domain for 2011 is also based on an indicator of the proportion of health insurance beneficiaries (aged 20–64) who received long-term disability benefits utilizing data from the Intermutualistic Agency (IMA). The crime domain builds on counts of criminal crimes that occurred between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2001, aggregated at the level of municipality, were provided by the Directorate of Police Information and ICT Resources of the Federal Police Belgium.
