HealthDCAT-AP Editor

About

The HealthDCAT-AP editor aims to help users create HealthDCAT-AP compliant metadata records of their datasets, in RDF formats. The European Health Information Portal provides a sandbox for testing the editor out and for hosting the metadata records you create using the editor. Credentials can be obtained upon request.

Main features of the editor:

  • Intuitive interface that auto-generates complex RDF files; no technical knowledge required.
  • Supports metadata creation for sensitive data (EHDS regulation), protected data (Data Governance Act), and open data (High-Value Datasets regulation).
  • Easily identifies mandatory, recommended, and optional fields.
  • Supports DCAT multilingual tagging, allowing input in multiple languages (e.g., English, French).
  • Tracks progress, showing completed and missing sections; fields can be edited at any time.
  • Validates metadata records to ensure compliance and highlights missing fields

CANDIDATE UPDATED TEXT:

About
The HealthDCAT-AP Editor is a web-based tool designed to help data holders create structured, machine-readable metadata records for health datasets. It supports the creation of metadata aligned with HealthDCAT-AP, the health-specific application profile based on DCAT-AP and RDF.
The editor translates complex metadata requirements into a guided and user-friendly workflow. Instead of manually producing RDF files, users can complete clear form-based fields, identify which information is mandatory, recommended or optional, validate the metadata record, and export or publish the result.
The tool is intended for data holders, data stewards, metadata officers and other users involved in describing health datasets. It is particularly useful for users who need to produce interoperable metadata but do not necessarily have technical expertise in RDF, semantic web technologies or metadata modelling.
The European Health Information Portal provides a sandbox environment where the editor can be tested and where metadata records created through the tool can be hosted, reviewed and reused. This makes it possible to move from metadata creation to catalogue publication in a practical and accessible way.

Main features
The HealthDCAT-AP Editor allows users to:
create HealthDCAT-AP-compliant metadata records through an intuitive interface;
generate structured RDF metadata without manually writing RDF code;
select the relevant metadata profile depending on the type of dataset;
identify mandatory, recommended and optional fields during metadata creation;
add multilingual metadata values where applicable;
track progress and identify completed and missing sections;
validate metadata records and detect missing required information;
edit and update existing metadata records;
publish metadata records to a sandbox metadata catalogue;
support metadata creation for different access scenarios, including sensitive, protected and open data.

Why use the editor?
High-quality metadata is essential to make health datasets easier to find, understand, compare and reuse. However, producing metadata that is both technically valid and useful for catalogue users can be difficult, especially when it requires knowledge of RDF, controlled vocabularies and profile-specific validation rules.
The HealthDCAT-AP Editor lowers this barrier. It helps users create more consistent metadata by embedding the structure of HealthDCAT-AP directly into the interface. This supports better documentation of datasets, improves interoperability across catalogues, and helps organisations prepare metadata that can be shared, validated and reused more easily.
In practice, the editor supports the full metadata creation workflow: users select the appropriate profile, complete the required properties, validate the record, publish it to the catalogue, and return to the editor later if the metadata needs to be updated.

Getting started
Users can access the HealthDCAT-AP Editor through the European Health Information Portal. The portal also provides a dedicated page with further information on HealthDCAT-AP, the editor, and the sandbox catalogue.
Credentials to test the editor can be requested from the HealthDCAT-AP team.
