Belgian National Burden of Disease Study Estimates of the burden of disease Causes of death Our estimates are based on the official causes of death database compiled by Statbel. We first map the ICD-10 codes of the underlying causes of death to the Global Burden of Disease cause list, consisting of 131 unique causes of deaths. Next, we perform a probabilistic redistribution of ill-defined deaths to specific causes, to obtain a specific cause of death for each deceased person.
This dataset contains data from 2011 with estimates of the Belgian Index of multiple deprivation (BIMD) by municipality. The BIMD provides a multidimensional view on social deprivation in Belgium, integrating 6 domains - education, employment, income, housing, crime, and health. It provides a robust basis for assessing social inequalities in health and other outcomes. The BIMD is a relative measure of deprivation, and is computed at the level of the statistical sector, the smallest administrative level in Belgium.

In a Health Examination Survey (HES) objective health information is collected among a representative sample of the total population, including those who have no contact with health services. The collection of objective health measures at population level is particularly important for items that are often not accurately reported in a health interview survey (e.g. height and weight) and for diseases that may be present without any symptoms but have important health consequences (e.g. high blood pressure or high cholesterol level in the blood).
Whole-genome sequencing data from 100 blood samples that have been collected from a reference cohort reflecting the general Belgian population. A matrix containing Single Nucleotide Variants (SNVs) identified in a sample of 100 BELHES participants. The file is a CSV file with one line per sample (pseudonymised ID) and one column per variant. Column headers are chr:position. Reference genome version used was GRCh38.
A national Health Interview Survey (HIS) provides an overall picture of the health status of the population and allows to identify the main health problems, as well as the social and behavioral factors that influence them. This information enables health authorities to pursue a proactive health policy aimed at improving public health and addressing the needs of groups at risk.
